Congratulations to Professor Svetlana Jitomirskaya! She has been awarded the title of Chancellor's Fellow for three years. This campus title is used to honor and recognize scholars of exceptional value to the university, and whose recent achievements in scholarship evidence extraordinary promise for world-class contributions to knowledge.

Professor Jitomirskaya works in the interplay between Mathematical Physics and Dynamical Systems. She is considered the leading expert on the spectral theory of Schrodinger operators with quasiperiodic potentials, and has published major results concerning the almost-Mathieu operator, introduced by Hofstader and Peierls to describe Bloch electrons in a magnetic field. She has received several honors and awards for her research. In 1996, she received a Sloan Fellowship. She has given invited lectures at the International Congress of Mathematical Physics in 1994 (Paris) and in 2000 (London), and at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2002 (Beijing). In 2006, she gave a plenary talk at the International Congress of Mathematical Physics. Professor Jitomirskaya was awarded the UCI Distinguished Mid-Career Faculty Award for Research in 2004. In the following year, she was awarded the Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize by the American Mathematical Society. The Satter Prize recognizes an outstanding contribution to mathematics research by a woman in the previous six years.
